(these test routines are non-invasive and non-destructive and should take you no more than 5 minutes)

Step 1:
Listen to your computer. Is your hard drive making abnormal clicking noises?

Yes:
Turn the power off.
You have a hardware crash - and there's typically nothing you can do as an end user to fix it. This is the most critical step. Call TLSI!

No:
Proceed to Step 2
|

Step 2:
Set up your computer to start from floppy/A drive.
|
|
|
Step 3:
Determine your type of drive and...
IDE:
Reboot, enter CMOS/Bios and
go to "IDE autodetect".
Does it detect your Hard Drive?
|
SCSI:
Reboot, access SCSI controller BIOS (typically CTRL-A on startup) and run "SCSI bus detect".
Does it detect your Hard Drive?
|
Yes:
Save any BIOS/CMOS or SCSI Controller BIOS settings. Reboot computer from a bootable floppy disk. make sure that you have the program called fdisk.exe (any version) on the bootable floppy. On command prompt, run "fdisk.exe".
Did fdisk see your drive?

No:
Stop at this point and call TLSI.
Explain that you have a hardware problem.
|
Yes:
If fdisk sees your HD, then 95% of the time you have a software problem
DO NOT MAKE ANY ADJUSTMENTS
You are only using fdisk to see the drive. Changes will cause a total data loss!
Stop at this point and call TLSI.
Explain that you have a software problem.

No:
Stop at this point and call TLSI.
Explain that you have a hardware problem.

TLSI does not recommend running any third party disk utilities until you have first contacted us to make sure it's being done right.
Computer manufacturers' tech support won't care about your data loss, because it is primarily their job to make sure your hardware is running again.

Run "Drive Setup" or "Apple HD Utility".
Does the MacOS Drive Utility see your Hard Drive?

Yes:
Stop at this point and call TLSI.
Explain that you have a software problem.

No:
Stop at this point and call TLSI.
Explain that you have a hardware problem.
